John "O'Bie" O'Brien - Rest in Peace
Many of you would have fond memories of club stalwart, John "O'Bie" O'Brien, a former Balmain and North Sydney Hooker who enjoyed a 60 year association with Holy Cross league teams and sadly passed away on 2 May 2015. He will be sadly missed by the Holy Cross Rhinos club, his family and all who knew him.
"BALMAIN rugby league fraternity are mourning the death of highly-respected mentor John O’Brien (pictured) of East Ryde who passed away in Royal North Shore Hospital last Saturday [2 May 2015] after a long illness.
O’Brien, a former Balmain and North Sydney hooker, enjoyed a 60 year association with Holy Cross rugby league teams." Full details <News 8th May 2015>

Rhinos: NRL Grass Roots Club of the Year 2012
On Monday night I was privileged to attend the 2012 Rugby League One
Community Awards on behalf of the Rhinos, at the Sydney Town
Hall. I am pleased to
advise we were awarded the ARL Grass Roots Club of the Year. The award was presented on
the basis of outstanding service to the community through fundraising for breast
cancer, acknowledgement of the significant volunteer contribution of club stalwart John O'Brien with his successful Men of League nomination and the development of
junior rugby league. The prize was $2000 which will go
towards funding
us. We were one of three final nominations Australiawide so we were very humbled and excited to win. With the support of a solid committee we have developed a strong
community base and are proud of this achievement which I believe continues to
reflect positively on the club and our involvement in
Junior Rugby League. There are some photos on the website main page and the TWT will run a small piece this week. Looking forward to the celebration at presentation day. Regards Peter
Boyle, Rhinos President <News 2012>

Discount tickets to State of Origin II in Sydney sold out ...
The Rhinos managed easily to sell their NSWRL allocation of tickets to State of Origin II. As a result, 50 Holy Cross JRLFC faithful had the time of their lives at ANZ Stadium Homebush on June 13. Monies raised, of course, go towards the running of our club.
Rhinos' season launch and jersey presentation ..
With the season almost on us, it’s time for everyone to collect their 2012 playing gear. Jumpers, shorts and socks will be handed out to all teams at Frank Street this Wednesday, April 11. The club will also be hosting for the first time a match under lights with the BDJRL U17s development squad taking on Auckland. The game will commence at 5pm and conclude at 6:30pm, allowing the jerseys to be presented at some stage during this window. Full canteen and FREE BBQ facilities will be running and we urge as many parents and children come along and support the boys. For those teams who did not collect their match balls last Sunday this will also be the only day to access the canteen prior to our next scheduled home match.
Rhino minis star in NRL half time show ...
A contingent of Rhinos U8s stamped themselves stars of the future with two outstanding performances at the recent Wests Tigers NRL clash with South Sydney at the SFS. Holy Cross Maroons ran out 1-nil winners over Umina Souths and downed Campbelltown 5-nil. A top effort, boys. Well done! The guys also got to run out onto the field with the likes of Benji Marshall, Aaron Woods and Chris Heighington.
Rhino 9s/10s win big in pre-season ...
Congratulations to both the Rhinos U9 Golds and U10 Golds on their respective 2012 pre-season titles. The 9s recently took out the Robbie Farah Challenge hosted by Leichhardt Wanderers at Blackmore Oval, downing Concord-Burwood Wolves in the final with just 11 boys available. The following week, the 10s claimed the Mark O'Neill Shield at the Shamrock's home ground, St Pat's at Dundas, winning six games on the day.
Vale Rhinos Life Member Allan Kelly ...
It is with regret that we inform you of the passing of one of our long-standing Life Members, Allan Kelly aged 83. Although unable to attend the Rhinos' 50th anniversary dinner in June due to ill health, Allan took great delight and pride when awarded his jubilee medal during a bedside visit. Allan is survived by his wife Pat, children Ross and Cathy and grand children Erin, Daniel and Caitlin. Mass of Christian Burial for the late Allan Kelly will be offered on Wednesday, December 14 within the Sacred Heart Chapel, Barnet Avenue, Rookwood at 10:00am. Following, the cortege will proceed to the adjacent cemetery. By request no flowers. Donations to a charity of your choice, would be appreciated.
Rhinos aim to make the grade in 2012 ...
The newly-elected Rhinos executive has voted unanimously to grade teams in 2012. At this stage, the move will only affect our U9s, 11s, 13s and possibly our 10s, providing we are again able to field two teams. Under the proposal, boys in these age groups will be selected in either first or second division sides based on an assessment of their performances in several pre-season trial games. Coaching co-ordinators Rhys Provan and Grant Wheelhouse will oversee the process with assistance from an independent selector and the relevent age-group coaches. The club also hopes to formulate a written grading policy . The new arrangement will replace the current system of loosely selecting teams according to friendship groups, preferences and coaching appointments. A re-grading process will take place at the beginning of each new season.
